This unusual, lidded basket presents a bit of a mystery to be solved.

In terms of construction, it’s a classic Interior Salish lidded and coiled basket form with a hinged lid and imbricated designs. However, it’s the specificity of the imagery depicted – the tall, long-necked geese or swans encircling the basket – that poses a challenge. Birds such as these are classic, and highly particular, images on Tŝilhqot'in basketry. It’s possible, or even likely, that this basket was made by a person of mixed Tŝilhqot'in and Interior Salish descent, or someone who had married from one group into the other. It is a fine and rare example of Interior British Columbia weaving.
