As mentioned in lot 34, the Nlaka’pamux, formerly known as the Thompson River Salish, are renowned for their coiled cedar bark and cherry bark baskets. An Interior Salish group whose territory spans the Thompson, Fraser, and Nicola Rivers, baskets by Nlaka’pamux women have traveled all over the world and are a staple in the historic Northwest Coast art market. This diminutive, lidded basket features an intricate imbricated pattern of alternating bands of black and white and reddish-brown and white cherry bark. It’s in very good condition for its age, with a tight-fitting lid and intact imbrications.
