An Interior Salish people whose territory spans the Thompson, Fraser, and Nicola Rivers, Nlaka’pamux women produced baskets that travelled widely and became a mainstay of the historic Northwest Coast art market. Coiled Nlaka’pamux baskets are a stiffer form of basket, allowing weavers to create a variety of shapes and sizes, including picnic baskets, heart shaped baskets, and even woven suitcases. This urn-style lidded basket is a classic Nlaka’pamux basketry form and features a wide, reticulating pattern in imbricated white, reddish-brown, and black cherry bark. The basket is in overall good condition, with a rich patina and the imbrications largely intact.
