The figures present are Grandfather Raven in hat, the Box of Daylight, and a Human, all mounted on a round alder base. The pole is carved in red cedar and painted in red, green, orange, brown, and black commercial paints. Although the original monumental pole is a classic Tlingit image, this model pole was made by a Nuu-chah-nulth artist, most likely for a curio shop on Vancouver Island or the adjacent Lower Mainland. In the first half of the 20th century, local Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish artists made model totem poles, oftentimes incorporating more Northern imagery, to sell to steamship tourists in Seattle or Vancouver, who were preparing to depart for, or were just returning from, “Totem Pole Route” excursions to Alaska. This was the context in which Tlingit-inspired poles, such as this one, were made by Nuu-chah-nulth artists.
