The son of renowned artists Kenojuak Ashevak and Johnniebo Ashevak, it is safe to say that Adamie Ashevak grew up surrounded by artistic expression and talent. He began carving when he was 10 years old with some tutelage from his parents while still living on the land. It is little wonder that a preferred subject of his throughout his career has been the polar bear, a fellow inhabitant of the tundra.

Carved from the local deep green Kinngait stone, this bear has the air of a having been very well fed. With a paw raised and draped in forward motion, and an almost mischievous look behind him, he is perhaps walking away from a finished meal. A hallmark of Adamie's bears are the skillfully inlaid eyes that peer from the stone, further giving life to our lumbering friend.
