Alongside his art, he served on the Settlement Council, spent time in the local mine, and, after its closure, joined the Arts and Crafts Program, eventually taking on the role of Shop Supervisor. His biography matters because it may help to explain the directness of his work. There is no fussing here. The form is made to read at once.
Some will know him best for his ceramics, where animals are reduced to their most telling features. This bear deserves a place in that recognition. Carved from the hard local stone around Kangiqliniq, it stands on stocky legs and carries a simple, almost humorous face, close to caricature without losing its animal presence. The surface holds the density of the material, and the compact body gives the figure a sense of weight and resolve.
Provenance
Collection of John and Joyce Price, Seattle.
