There is a dichotomy to pairing Ba̱k’wa̱s and Dzunuḵ̓wa, both dark and threatening figures of the BC forests. Bak'was (the Wild Man of the Woods), the man-eating malevolence, is wide eyed and starkly staring at the viewer, with hair abounding from his head is a slightly bedraggled look. As he stalks the woods, Ba̱k’wa̱s intends to trick and deceive, and the acceptance of a gift from the him binds the soul of that poor unfortunate to him forever. By contrast, Dzunuḵ̓wa (the Wild Woman), despite her appearances and actions as a marauding hairy, cannibalistic giantess, can be a bringer of good fortune, especially if you manage to outsmart her and her vast knowledge. Here, she is depicted with her almost trademarked exaggerated simian facial features, long hair, and pursed, red lips. This pair of rattles by Jonathan Jacobson show his experimentation with a contemporary feel, as well as his focus on the traditional Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw stories.
