Traditionally, there was seasonal access to sealing grounds, fishing grounds, and caribou hunting areas through the region, as well as broad, open access to the Davis Straight in the Arctic Ocean and its various whales. The present work is perhaps an homage to the land and its provisions; like a disjointed comic book, the front and back features multiple scenes of hunting at the seal hole and then the triumphant return home. Carved into a likely locally found porous vertebrae, it stands as a visual marker to the land and its riches.Provenance
