At only 17, he was profiled in the North Bay Nugget on 22 May 1982 (p. 5), where it was noted that his uncle, James Simon, had encouraged his artistic development. His work gained further public recognition in 2004, when he donated one of his works to the newly renovated Wikwemikong Public Library. Though his artistic production was especially active in the 1980s, Trudeau’s dedication to his community has continued well beyond that period. In 2021, he co-hosted the workshop “Healing Aspects of the Land: Shkagamik Kwe Nandwegonah” with Marion Maar at the World Indigenous Suicide Prevention Conference.
This striking work by Randy Trudeau is animated by a palette that feels almost sunlit from within. Warm bands of yellow, orange, and soft brown move across the figure like layers of sherbet, are bright and buoyant, giving the figure an energy that is both joyful and charged. The figure itself reads as a shamanic presence, caught in a moment of transformation or invocation. Fine, wavering lines extend from the mouth, suggesting breath, speech, or incantation. Despite the intensity of the imagery, the overall tone remains harmonious.Provenance
