Kananginak returned to the subject repeatedly, in both drawing and stonecut, from the 1970s through to the end of his career. In Protecting the Herd, he presents a dominant muskox confronting the viewer as two others close ranks behind him. He has done a superb job of conveying the umingmak’s thick, windswept coats.Provenance
