There is an austerity, even a nobility, to this pair. Despite its small scale, the woman's proud, erect posture and her depiction at half-length recalls the imposing Madonna and Child works familiar in Christian imagery. "Mother Holding Her Child," however, retains an intimate and humane quality, with the two figures shown nearly cheek to cheek. The shape of the sculpture follows closely that of the stone block from which it has been carved but the distinctly Naujaat stone is so polished and rounded that it almost exudes warmth.
