Koomwartok Ashoona is the son of pioneering artist Pitseolak Ashoona and her husband, Ashoona, one of the settlement’s founders. Pitseolak Ashoona was the matriarch of perhaps the most important artistic dynasty in Kinngait. Koomwartok’s brothers Kiugak, Qaqaq, Namonai, and Ottochie were all well-respected carvers, and his sister Napachie Pootoogook is an important graphic artist.

Koomwartok was fascinated by stories of the Inuit spirit world, and many of his best works depict scenes of transformation. This lovely sculpture initially presents as a basking seal but gradually reveals transformational elements.
