Isaac Tait was the son of Nisga’a master carver Norman Tait. Tragically, Isaac passed away at just 35 years old. Although unsigned, this red cedar figural Frog dish bears many of the hallmarks of Isaac’s work. In particular, the shape of the Frog’s head and how it connects to the body of the bowl is indicative of his carving. Another distinct Isaac Tait feature is the segmented fingers with defined knuckles on the frog’s forepaws. Although Tait was known for his work with clear hardwood, the swirling grain of the red cedar has been visually maximized by the carver of this bowl and masterfully incorporated into the forms of the sculpture.
