In the case...The Kumeyaay used a variety of local plants to create the base materials for their basket, including deer grass, juncus, sumac, willow, and commonly agave and yucca. In the case of agave, it was cooked in earthen hearths, and the fibers would be removed from the rest of the plant material to then be woven together as a basket. While some Kumeyaay works can take months (some even up to a year) to finish, this petite example was hopefully a little faster for the artisan to create! It is no less a treasure than its larger counterparts, however, and the size adds to the charm.Provenance
