Although the artist remains unidentified, this sculpture exhibits characteristics associated with the carving traditions of North Baffin Island. The pale olive-green stone and softly modelled forms suggest an origin in the region, possibly Qikiqtarjuaq (formerly Broughton Island). Depicted standing upright on its hind flippers, the walrus assumes an animated, almost dancing posture, while its elongated tusks and raised foreflippers reinforce the strong vertical composition. Spare incised details and the natural mottling of the stone complement the clean, simplified carving, resulting in a sculpture that is both animated and elegantly composed.
