Taloyoak is renowned for its imaginative textile sculptures, in which Arctic animals are frequently endowed with human characteristics. This finely constructed work depicts a walrus carrying her calf in the hood of an amautiq, combining maternal imagery with playful transformation. Richly embroidered and carefully assembled, the sculpture reflects the inventive spirit that has distinguished the community’s soft-sculpture tradition since its emergence in the late twentieth century.

In this work, tight herringbone stitches trace the seams and contours of the amautiq, while bands of pale blue, turquoise and white chain stiches introduce pattern across the broad blue surfaces. A closed blanket stich enlivens the cuffs and hem. On the walrus, dark stitching defines the mouth, eyes and ears, while French knots form the whiskers, adding another delightful layer of texture and skill.
