The little cherry branches give this basket its charm. Worked in false embroidery with maidenhair fern and grass, the fruit and stems sit brightly against the warm cedar bark ground....The little cherry branches give this basket its charm. Worked in false embroidery with maidenhair fern and grass, the fruit and stems sit brightly against the warm cedar bark ground. The form is slightly conical, as is common in Tsimshian berry baskets, and the open twining near the rim gives the whole piece a lighter, more finished lift. Likely made in Alaska in the 1920s or 1930s, it is a small, useful object made lively by a very pleasing bit of decoration.
