Colour gives this basket much of its distinction. Bands of green, brown, and red move evenly around the conical body, each enlivened by pale bear grass false embroidery. The pattern is restrained but highly effective, giving the surface a measured sense of movement and refinement.

Made by an unidentified Chehalis artist from the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, the basket is woven from natural and dyed spruce root and bear grass in tight twining. The sturdy coiled rim and twined carrying handle speak to its practical function as a seed basket, while the precision of the weaving and the careful use of colour give the work its particular elegance.
