In the Arctic, of course, the dog was never merely a companion, but a hunter’s ally, a source of transport, and an essential presence in daily life.
Here, with splendid impossibility, one rests atop a woman’s head. Is it a remembered sled dog, a private thought, or perhaps the subject of the artist’s next carving? Whatever the answer, the conception is wonderfully playful. Deep cutting and broad hollows open the dense stone from within, giving this substantial sculpture an unexpected buoyancy.
