Often worn against the back...Coast Salish burden baskets were traditionally made as durable working containers, their deep forms designed to carry firewood, roots, berries, shellfish and other gathered materials. Often worn against the back and supported by a tumpline, they combined strength, flexibility and careful weight distribution.As Indigenous basketry entered expanding networks of exchange and sale in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, familiar utilitarian forms were increasingly adapted for collectors and the tourist market. Miniatures allowed artists to preserve recognizable regional shapes while demonstrating technical control on a far smaller scale. In the present case, at only 3 inches wide, this example condenses the burden basket into a remarkably complete and charming model. Its squared body, flaring rim and paired straps remain clearly legible, while restrained accents enliven the cedar surface.
