Long before the introduction of glass beads, porcupine quills were collected, dyed, softened, flattened to then be worked onto hide, bark and cloth as a decorative element to an object....Long before the introduction of glass beads, porcupine quills were collected, dyed, softened, flattened to then be worked onto hide, bark and cloth as a decorative element to an object. A skilled maker could produce designs that could be just about anything, be it geometric, symbolic, ceremonial, and in the case of this pair of baskets, biological in nature.While both baskets feature dyed red quills on their lids, a leaf to match a flower, the basket bodies differ in technique and range. The larger features openwork starbursts, white quills centred in red, while the smaller boasts a repeated crossed design in red and white. One maximalist and one minimalist, each basket compliments the other.
