Kenojuak Ashevak had 11 offerings in the 2002 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection, all of which prominently featured one of her favourite and oft repeated subjects, birds. Splash offers an interesting middle-ground amongst the offerings. While other works in the collection that year were more figurative, some were more spiritual in their rendering, as could be Kenojuak's way. Here, there is a meld of the figurative into nature. Most of the avian features of the bird are merely suggestions as deep oranges blend out from brighter reds and yellows. A stark black beak is the only immediately tell of the creature's origins. Perhaps this bird just went for a dip, one can imagine that the waters off Kinngait's shores are cool to all its residents!
