Parr began drawing late in life, after a hunting accident made it impossible for him to continue the life he had known on the land. His drawings became, in large part, a return to that world, recording remembered episodes of hunting and travel with remarkable economy and immediacy.

Untitled (Hunter with Knife, Sled, and Dogs Approaching Walrus and Seals) feels almost like an entire hunt compressed into a narrow strip of paper. Dogs surge across the sheet in a loose procession, one even nipping at the tail of a small seal pup, while a large walrus anchors the lower register. At right, the hunter stands apart from the commotion, knife in hand and arms thrown wide.

Parr makes little attempt to organize the scene according to conventional perspective or scale. Instead, he gives each important element its own space, allowing hunter, dogs, sled and quarry to coexist within the same crowded field. The result has the fractured logic of memory, with one vivid detail following another until the whole sheet seems animated by the movement and urgency of the hunt.
