The mask...This fine Pugwis mask was carved by Alex Hunt, a member of the famous family of Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw and Tlingit artists and scholars descended from Tlingit ethnologist George Hunt. The mask is rendered in a classic Hunt family style, with perfect symmetry, deep carving, and clean painting in red, black, and green. The Pugwis is a supernatural being who lives in the sea, sometimes referred to as an Undersea Wildman and associated with the spirits of drowned fisherman. The overall appearance of the face is fishlike, with a low reaching, V-shaped brow that terminates just above the nostrils. Pugwis is always depicted with large, beaver-like incisors.Provenance
