Upright and alert, with its wings drawn tightly to the body, the bird is shaped less through anatomical detail than through silhouette, swelling volume, and the firm containment of stone. Dense incised marks score the wings and breast, suggesting layered feathers and setting up a sharp contrast with the smoother modelling of the head and base. The mottled green stone deepens this surface play, its shifting patches of colour moving across the carved form like shadow over plumage. Small in scale but solid in presence, the falcon feels gathered, grounded, and intensely self-contained.
Provenance
Apparently purchased from Maynard’s Auctions, Vancouver, B.C., 25 October 2006, Lot 52, no receipt on file, accompanied by a copy of the Maynard’s Auction Catalogue.
