Some of that early, shared visual language between them can be seen in Joshim’s work, both in colour palette and feel to a scene. In the present Untitled (Bear), bold, dark formlines surround and define a large bear, its teeth bared and positively vibrating with energy. Its bodily profile view is jarred by both eyes facing the viewer, as with the second set of eyes, all unblinking in their stare. The bear’s crisp sections have been well printed, creating a final product that may well have been a study of prints to come for the Triple K Co-operative, a silkscreen studio in Red Lake founded by Joshim and his brothers in 1973.
