Prized for its deep colour and intricate natural veining, this exceptional stone appears to have come from a source that was subsequently exhausted or abandoned. Aupaluktuk has skilfully integrated the figures within the enveloping folds of an oversized amautiq, creating a harmonious, intimately conceived composition. The mother's ivory-inlaid eyes and teeth, together with pupils possibly fashioned from baleen, further exemplify the sophisticated combination of local materials characteristic of Inuit sculpture.
