The male figure, with his raised arm, appears poised to throw a spear or harpoon, now missing. The woman wears an amautiq, its enlarged hood and pouch designed to accommodate an infant, while a smaller figure completes this grouping. Carefully incised details of their clothing, together with traces of red and black pigment, lend each figure a distinct character. Such miniature carvings were produced in Labrador during a period of increasing contact with Moravian missionaries, traders, and visiting Europeans, and were intended for exchange or sale.
