The taller woman wears an amautiq with a carefully shaped apron, its contours delicately accented with touches of red and black pigment. Her companion, possibly a younger male, wears a simpler outer parka, or qulittuq, with dark boots and contrasting trim. Their finely modelled faces possess a pleasing individuality, while the similarities in their proportions, surface treatment and delicate incisions suggest they may well be the work of the same carver. Dating to around 1890, this charming pair exemplifies the sophistication of early Nunatsiavut ivory carving, where even the smallest figures could be rendered with considerable delicacy and an affectionate attention to detail.
