The youngest nestles cheek to cheek with its mother, sheltered within the generous hood of her amautiq, while the older child, dressed in a parka of their own, sits comfortably upon her lap. Carved from the dense black basalt characteristic of Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) and the surrounding region, the sculpture’s smooth, rounded surfaces and substantial weight lend a pleasing solidity to this intimate expression of maternal affection.
