Few carvers have understood the human body in motion as instinctively as Davie Atchealak. Among the great sculptors of southern Baffin Island, he brought the same buoyant sense of balance and bodily force to dancing bears and drum dancers alike.

Here, the Drum Dancer seems to swell out of the stone. Balanced on one foot, chest thrust forward and head lifted, he appears caught at the height of his song. The body is compact but charged. Thick legs brace and bend, the torso pushes outward, and the arms hold their pose with a sense of muscular tension that can almost be felt in the hand.

In Davie Atchealak's hands, the hard stone seems almost springy and responsive. Flesh appears to press against its own contours. Weight gathers in the planted foot, then seems to rise through the hips and chest. Even the small stone monolith beneath him becomes part of the performance: less a base than a point of departure. The figure looks ready to push off from it and step straight into the room.
