Mother and Child with Ermine is an enchanting work that, while small in scale, retains a delightfully animated composition. In the present sculpture, the very small-scale attribute of the work helps to focus its complexity. No detail is sacrificed, despite the minimal amount of the medium. Here, each figure is full of life. The woman genuflects to a resting kneel, making the lively appearance of the child in her amautiq, who pops up from her hood with stiffened arms, felt all the more strongly. Even the ermine twisting about in the woman’s hands is a concentration of playful energy.
