The mother in this work is solid and large of limb, her massive lap and embrace providing to her child an almost fortress of protection. The impression of the weighty mass becomes less insistent when our eye lingers over this pair. Here, the unidentified carver has accounted for every important detail. The strands of hair on the mother figure are outlined and shaped to collect neatly into a braid at the back of her head. The folds of the garments of the two figures show a slightly roughened surface to contrast against the highly polished swaths of their clothing.
