Lucy Tasseor’s sculpture has often been described as abstract, despite the fact that she resolutely chose to represent the family in her work. In fact many of her works do present an overall abstract quality, with large planes of unworked or minimally worked stone acting as a matrix for heads, faces, and the occasional arm.
Family is one of Tasseor’s relatively rare works that appears truly figural, both at first glance and upon closer examination. We are immediately struck by the powerful sense of an almost regal human figure: a statuesque standing woman seemingly adorned with faces (as if they were heavy embroideries on a robe-like garment). The overall proportions of the work furthermore lead us to read the work as a figure first, and only then do we realize that we are confronted with a family composition. The work is strikingly beautiful, and like many of Tasseor’s sculptures, monumental despite its relatively small scale.
