A visionary apparition, "Into the Light" is an outstanding example of the etching and aquatints Kenojuak produced with Paul Machnik. Atop a dark, yet incandescent, vignette of atmospheric greys sits a lone fowl that is surrounded by a bizarre, birdlike creature. The slender, elongated throats of this beast seem suspended in their motion so that our eye has the leisure to explore every part of its fantastic form.
What gives the scene such life is the feeling of warmth and light, created by the pictorial effects that can be achieved with aquatint. The modeling and tonal values afforded by the medium accentuate the sense of drama and awe for this wonderous scene. The compositional merits of "Into the Light" are undoubtedly why the work was chosen as the cover image for Leslie Boyd's 2007 publication, "Cape Dorset Prints: A Retrospective, Fifty Years of Printmaking at the Kinngait Studios."
