Rendered on a rather majestic scale, "Young Bird in Flight" was produced using the sugar lift technique. This lift-ground printing process presents the classic motifs of Kenojuak’s artistic repertoire in a novel and dramatic way.
Sugar lift is a line-etching technique that allows for strokes to be rendered rather broadly by using a thick, syrupy mixture — paste like in consistency and gritty with undissolved sugar — brushed on to a plate. When the drawing dries, the plate is coated in varnish and washed with warm water. The drawn passages then lift off, exposing the plate for etching. The resulting rumbling lines produce the effect of a loose, free flowing visual melody.
The present print was handpainted by Spanish artist Beatriz Sobrado Sámano in a dazzling spray of colour.
