Introducing Our Fall 2025 Live Auction
of Inuit & First Nations Art
We at First Arts are thrilled to share our Fall 2025 Live Auction, presented across two catalogues and featuring exceptional works by North American Indigenous artists, historic and contemporary.Leading the sculpture section is Pauta Saila’s Roaring Polar Bear. It is the largest known example of Pauta’s bears outside the monumental limestone installation at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which it echoes in both magnitude and authority.Counterbalancing Pauta’s gravitas is Davie Atchealak’s Four Dancing Bears, a work of Davie’s showmanship at full tilt. From a startlingly small plinth, four bears climb and lift one another in a chain of improbable motion. What reads first as playful choreography reveals, on close looking, a breathtaking command of balance, imagination, and control.Historic Northwest Coast holdings enrich this sale, including a set of three remarkably preserved model totem poles by the unidentified Tlingit “Albert Berry Shop Carver,” which have remained together since at least 1909, as shown in a University of Washington archive photo from John Nathan Cobb’s collection. These three poles show confident proportions, finely articulated mouths, tongues, and whiskers, disciplined figure stacking with controlled negative space, and hallmark bases of monoxylous pedestals on chamfered plinths, the larger pole hollowed at the back to lighten mass and sharpen the silhouette.Painting finds a powerful statement in a remarkable diptych by Norval Morrisseau, certified by Morrisseau Art Consulting Inc. (now Art Experts Canada Inc.). Across a turquoise ground, travellers ride within the immense body of the Medicine Serpent, guardian figures attend, and a horned figure signals shamanic presence. Close looking rewards attention: a faint object at lower right and a clear footprint near the upper centre collapse the distance between painter and painting, anchoring the work to Morrisseau’s studio and presence.Prints are also a strong presence in this sale, including several from 1959, among them Niviaqsi’s Man Hunting at Seal Hole in Ice. Long praised for its distilled conception, the print wastes nothing: a hunter, reduced to essential form and tension, fills the sheet, and fresh inks heighten its solemnity and reverence.Contemporary Northwest Coast masterworks, likewise, add breadth to this offering. Joe David’s Whalers Moon sets a central Moon face within a rotating cedar-rope corona painted with paired Whales and Thunderbirds in customary Nuu-chah-nulth style. A generation-spanning complement appears in Preston Singletary’s early Raven Steals the Sun (2000), where glass serves as the perfect medium to hold, bend, and release light while reflecting themes of transformation and responsibility. Beau Dick’s Ghost Mask with Articulated Raven fuses deep customary knowledge with fearless invention; knife-finished facets catch light beneath a deep, darkened red, horsehair bristles from the surface, and theatre and ceremony meet in a magnetic presence.Muskoxen are richly represented. Osuitok’s Sheltering Muskox is a rare departure from his slender-legged caribou and poised birds; its power lies in density rather than delicacy, a compact body carrying real weight and presence. In dialogue are David Ikutaaq’s Two Muskoxen, Side by Side, where a pair press flank to flank in a charged exchange — read as the onset of a defensive wall or a mating ritual — carved with the quintessential solidity of Qamani’tuaq; and Kananginak Pootoogook’s Windswept, Standing Muskox, its low-slung silhouette and wave-like incisions reading as wind through winter coat, antler horns and compact mass conveying purposeful strength.Other sculptural standouts include the intimate Mother and Child by John Kavik, a compact, deeply felt work where mass and tenderness share the same form; Oviloo Tunnillie’s Ikayukta Tunnillie Holding Her Drawing of an Owl, one of only three known depictions of her husband’s grandmother, the elder offering her owl drawing as if mid-story; and, from Naujaat, Paul Malliki’s Caribou Caught a Scent, a poised moment of alert movement: head lifted, foreleg raised, broad antlers echoing the upward gaze.Early Kinngait sculpture is thoughtfully represented. Kiakshuk’s Standing Woman, c. 1957-58, in dense grey stone bridges his compact 1950s figures and the taller, more articulated serpentine works of the early 1960s. Alongside it, Seated Woman, c. 1954-55, is confidently ascribed to Niviaqsi: shallow almond eyes set high, a single continuous groove for the mouth, and a straight, softly triangular nose rising from the brow align closely with documented works. We also feature stellar early pieces from the collection of Colin (C.J.G.) Molson, an early champion of Inuit art whose association with La Guilde (The Canadian Handicrafts Guild) enabled acquisitions in the early 1950s, including the utterly charming Standing Woman with Tattoos and Ulu, and others,Textiles are also a strength this season. Marion Tuu’luq’s vibrant community scene brings figures into lively relation through confident stitch and colour, while her early beaded collar foreshadows the monumental textiles that followed. From Kinngait, Ooloosie Saila’s beaded amautiq honours her mother-in-law, Kenojuak Ashevak, the only homage created with Kenojuak’s permission, centring motifs from Audacious Owl, Rabbit Eating Seaweed, and a hooded face.In the same spirit of renewal, Clarissa Rizal’s The River Robe evokes the surge of a salmon run with a river traced in mother-of-pearl buttons and salmon in negative space, a wave-like border set with antique lures that rattle in motion. Cheryl Samuel’s Kete Remembered reflects decades of close dialogue with Indigenous master weavers; through The Raven’s Tail (1987) and hands-on collaborations, Samuel documented, reconstructed, and helped revive Ravenstail weaving as a living practice. For space and time, we’ll stop here but we are confident there are works to delight every collector. It is our honour to present these works for sale and to live with them – however briefly – before they find new homes. -
