While Ennutsiak’s best known works often feature large groups of people gathered together for communal activities such as flensing, bible study, and particularly birthing scenes, he seems to have been at his best when focusing on more intimate subjects. This captivating depiction of a grandmother embracing her young grandchild radiates profound sensitivity. One marvels at how the artist was able to convey such emotion using only the most rudimentary tools.
