Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me” 1 Corinthians 11:25). reflects Oonark's deep affiliation with Christianity.
In 1927, the Anglican missionary, Canon James and his assistant, Thomas Tapatai, visited the Utkuhikhalingmiut and Oonark quickly adopted the teachings. She was baptized in 1944 and chose her Christian name, “Jessie.” Beginning in the mid 1960s, Christian imagery would appear in Oonark’s drawings.
She would often hybridize her works with both traditional and Christian subjects and themes but, on occasion — as in the present drawing — Oonark would create graphics with purely Christian subject matter. Reflective of her devotional intensity, the believed subject for this work is one of the most enduring themes in art: the institution of the Eucharist by Christ at the Last Supper. While it is unlikely that she would have encountered the works of Cubist artists, the profile and split nose of the Christ figure undeniably recall the Cubist efforts to present a multitude of views in a single presentation.Provenance
