Marjorie Agluvak was the wife of the renowned Baker Lake sculptor Mathew Aqigaaq. While she created a few small carvings as well, she is best known as a textile artist. She began by sewing decorated clothing; an embroidered vest and an appliquéd parka were submitted by her to the Crafts from Arctic Canada competition and included in its landmark exhibition of 1974. Agluvak started making works on cloth at around the same time, and hangings by her have been included in dozens of exhibitions since that time. Transforming Figure with People and Bears, with its bright colours and strikingly bold, simplified imagery, is typical of her mature style; her transformation figures are frequently compared to those of Agluvak’s exact contemporary and fellow Baker Lake textile artist Irene Avaalaaqiaq (b. 1941).
