To our thinking, Jimmy Taipanak is another example of a Kivalliq sculptor whose work has been under-appreciated. We consider him to be one of the great “old time” carvers whose works possess true folk-art charm and a gentle yet quite powerful sensibility. Taipanak’s works—mostly fairly small-scale bears and human faces—are simple yet striking. This remarkable Muskox has the rawness of a sculpture by the great John Kavik of Rankin Inlet, yet also the quiet composure and delicacy of Taipanak’s Qamani'tuaq colleague George Tatanniq. Moreover, it’s one of those pieces that simply begs to be picked up and held in one’s hand.
