The sakku is attached to a length of skin line and...While there are several name variations depending on region, the sakku or harpoon tip is an ingenious hunting tool. The sakku is attached to a length of skin line and rests at the distal end of the harpoon. The coiled line is either held by a stationary seal hunter or attached to an avataq flotation device if qayaqing (kayaking). Once the toggle point is embedded in its target, the hunter can retrieve his prey by pulling on the line. Early sakku designs were often decorated with symbolic designs and, occasionally as with the present example, the proximal ends carved to imitate seal flippers.Provenance
