While portraiture in Inuit sculpture in the 1950s and 1960s was uncommon, several carvers from Inukjuak produced distinctive portrait busts that captured the dignity and individuality of their subjects. Compact yet commanding, these intimate portraits feature strong simplified forms that convey quiet strength. We know that Johnny’s wife Mary served as the model for most of his depictions of women. We wonder whether this jaunty visage is perhaps a self-portrait of a young Johnny. The piece suggests both intellectual depth and a cheerful demeanour.
