Taipanak is best known for small sculptures of polar bears and other animals, as well as for mask-like human faces. Across both subjects, his work is marked by simplified form and, at times, recalls the style and sensibility of John Kavik of Rankin Inlet. Taipanak was married to the much-loved and highly respected Baker Lake textile artist Annie Piklak Taipanak.
For similar compositions, particularly the style of the legs which are the same simplified, almost geometric styling, narrowing only slightly as they descend and terminate in blunt, squared or gently rounded feet see Bear, 1979, First Arts, June 2022, Lot 155, and a signed example at Waddington's, 10 November 2008, Lot 305.Provenance
