Hands-free methods and devices to carry babies and small children vary throughout the world, and have both the pros of being able to keep up with your own to-do list,...Hands-free methods and devices to carry babies and small children vary throughout the world, and have both the pros of being able to keep up with your own to-do list, and keeping your baby close at hand. In these Dene examples, either slung at the hip or back, the wide strip of hide helps take the weight of the child and distribute it along the parent's shoulders. The space also creates an area for decoration in addition to its usefulness, a canvas where dedications to the child and its culture can be lovingly applied. In the present examples, fragrant smoked hide provides the support for long stretches of repeated and mirrored loom beading that has been applied on top. Anchored on brilliant white backgrounds, strong primary colours and vibrant neons punch out into geometric lines, sparkling as the light catches them. As a child grows out of the need for a baby belt, the belt can be displayed at home as a keepsake, and a rightful celebration of the maker's designs upon it.Provenance
