    Often animated as hand-held or suspended props, Sun masks would emerge from behind the dance curtain, that charged threshold between the human world and the supernatural one. Their meaning is equally expansive. Beyond associations with creation and ancestral lineage, they speak to the sun’s practical and sustaining gifts: the shaping of weather, the ripening of berries, the return of salmon, and the seasonal rhythms that governed preparation for hunting and fishing.
