Stanley Matilpi was from a well-known family of Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw carvers. Stanley started carving in the 1960s and was taught by his older brother, Oscar Matilpi (1933-1999). This finely carved mask...Stanley Matilpi was from a well-known family of Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw carvers. Stanley started carving in the 1960s and was taught by his older brother, Oscar Matilpi (1933-1999). This finely carved mask depicts a Dzunuḵ̓wa, identifiable by its sharp cheeks, pursed lips, sunken eyes, and prominent, somewhat pointed ears. Stanley has left the mask unpainted to emphasize its wavy grain, which accentuates the sculpture and lends texture to the otherwise smooth surface in a pleasing way.
