This is a well-carved and painted Raven Rattle by the late Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw artist Joe Peters Jr. Peters was a promising young artist who studied with master carvers Dwayne Simeon, Beau Dick, and Russell Smith, but who unfortunately died at just 34 years old.

This fine Raven Rattle, carved in yellow cedar and painted in red, black, and green, also features abalone inlay, cord binding, and an ermine skin. Raven rattles were historically made by Northern groups such as the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian, but they moved south into Wakashan-speaking communities through marriage and trade. Highly standardized, they almost always feature a large Raven, a reclining humanoid figure, and a Kingfisher connected to the humanoid by a Frog figure or tongue. Peters’s example largely follows that canon while still carrying some of his own flavour.
