This ornate and elegant Speaker’s Staff features, from the top, Eagle, Killer Whale, Copper, Serpent, and an obconical shape reminiscent of Victorian furniture feet. The lithe carving of this Speaker’s Staff creates a pleasantly gracile form, with allusions to both folk art canes and treens. Here, the Eagle and Killer Whale are stretched into gracefully thin renderings, a treatment rarely seen on other Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw staffs, which often feature more substantial figures with added appendages and wings. The staff is monoxylous, having been carved from a single piece of red cedar, and has been left unpainted to emphasize the fine detailing and sculptural aspects of the work.
