The lithe carving of this Speaker’s Staff creates a pleasantly gracile form, with allusions to both folk art canes and treens. Here, the Eagle and Killer Whale are stretched into gracefully thin renderings, a treatment rarely seen on other Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw staffs, which often feature more substantial figures with added appendages and wings. The staff is monoxylous, having been carved from a single piece of red cedar, and has been left unpainted to emphasize the fine detailing and sculptural aspects of the work.
