Known by the nickname “Carver Jim,” Evans made masks in both Coast Salish and Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw styles. This Coast Salish-style Deer mask is carved in red cedar and fitted with a pair of real deer antlers. It is painted in brown, white, green, red, and black, with copper-overlay eyes, red rope accents, and hammered red cedar bark flanking the face and falling beneath it. The antlers, together with the exaggerated scale of the ears, give the mask a lively and slightly whimsical presence.
